Create a personal publicity strategy to raise awareness of your work and attract more readers
Whether you're writing fiction, nonfiction or poetry, if you want your work to reach readers it has to be promoted. After all, if people aren’t aware your fabulous creation exists they can’t ask for it in bookshops!
So how are you going to get the word out? Publicity.
And if, like most writers, you don’t have a publicist on tap this means you're going to have to take care of it yourself.

Over the course of two days we'll examine the elements that can be part of a publicity strategy. We'll explore:
the ways digital marketing can help you reach new audiences, including social media, blogging, your email list and your author website;
the process of organising and delivering author events and reaching your audience face-to-face;
how to reach out to media organisations, online publications and blogs to organise interviews and guest content;
how to develop an advertising strategy; and
the pros and cons, time/cost requirements and benefits of each of the above.
Our focus throughout the workshop will be to determine which promotional activities suit your individual circumstances including your available time, energy and budget. By the second afternoon you will have created your own tailored publicity strategy along with a plan for executing it.
Participants are asked to bring a summary of their social media presence and a list of any promotional activities they’ve undertaken in the past two years.

Australian crime fiction legend and creator of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Kerry Greenwood, will launch L.J.'s second book Mayan Mendacity at the SheKilda3 One Day Crime Spree in Melbourne on 19 November 2016.

CALLING ALL BOOKWORMS: There's a Body in the Library!
Readers, library lovers and GLAMR staff and students are invited to join local author L.J.M. Owen in conversation with Sophie Mannix to discuss L.J.'s Canberra-based crime fiction series Dr Pimms, Intermillennial Sleuth. With archaeologists and librarians, ancient murder and family secrets, this is one series where the skeletons don’t stay buried.
We’ll explore the historical research behind the first book in the series, Olmec Obituary, and L.J. will introduce – spoiler free – the history behind the second instalment Mayan Mendacity. There’ll be plenty of time to discuss your ideas about the themes, settings, characters and plot of Olmec Obituary as well as ask questions of the author.
There’s a prize pack up for grabs for the best question asked on the day: a collector’s set of all three editions of Olmec Obituary.

FROM BRAIN TO BOOK, Authors & Publishers, at Muse Literary Salon, 6 November 2016
Join local author Dr L.J.M. Owen and Echo Publishing commissioning editor Angela Meyer as they demystify the process of writing and publishing a book.
In December 2014 L.J. posted Olmec Obituary, her first novel and the beginning of a Canberra-based crime fiction series, on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. Five days later Angela spotted it online and the rest, as they say, is history. Echo published Olmec Obituary in November 2015 and has just released the second book in the series, Mayan Mendacity.
In this Muse Sunday Salon L.J. will describe her experience of writing a book, getting an offer from a publisher and the occasionally disorientating world of traditional publishing from an author’s point of view. Angela will discuss what catches her eye, how she signs new authors and what the process of publishing looks like from the inside.
There will be plenty of time for questions about the joys and challenges of bringing books to life.

Canberra's own Dr Elizabeth Pimms is back!
Join 666 ABC Canberra's Lish Fejer and author, archaeologist and librarian Dr L.J.M. Owen at the National Library of Australia for the official launch of Mayan Mendacity, Book Two in the Dr Pimms, Intermillennial Sleuth series.
This time, Elizabeth investigates tiny skeletons and misshapen skulls recovered from a Guatemalan island. How do they relate to an ancient Mayan queen? And who was the elusive Great Scribe?
Filled with archaeological intrigue, forensic insight and cosy comfort, return to the world of Dr Pimms, Intermillennial Sleuth. Really cold cases.
The launch will be hosted at the National Library Bookshop by the National Library of Australia's Dr Martin Woods.

NANOWRIMO KICK-OFF at Queanbeyan Library, 29 October 2016

INKLINGS YOUNG WRITERS GROUP, Queanbeyan Library, 26 October 2016
The Queanbeyan Library has a writing group for young adults called INKLINGS. The group is open to ages 12-18 and is held on the last Wednesday of every month from 3:30-4:30pm.
L.J. will be joining the group in October to talk about all the exciting opportunities open to young writers and answer any questions you have about writing and the world of publishing.

COBARGO CRIME CONVENTION, 7-9 October 2016

Putting the SCIENCE IN YOUR FICTION Workshop, ACT Writers Centre, 4 September 2016
Need DNA results in your crime novel? Action scenes that don’t break the laws of physics? Grand feats of engineering in your science fiction tale?
In this day-long workshop you will learn how to: define the area of science you need to understand; research it; identify which details to include in your story; when to reveal the information; and how to ensure you’ve struck the correct balance between fact and fiction.
